Meet the Chef

Chef Savage is a full-time cannabis lover and a part-time chef.  Born and raised in Richmond VA, he has found a major love for the city and for its food. But with the passage of Initiative 71, he was able to explore another meaningful part of his life: cannabis.

Prior to launching Commonwealth Canna Cuisine, Chef Savage worked in the medical field specializing in physical therapy and sports science. After speaking with many of his clients, he found that many of them had been using cannabis for pain relief and for feeling their best through their pain. He found much joy in cultivating his own cannabis at home as a hobby for medicine and for his own pain relief. A love for the plant and for the power it has to help people blossomed into a dream.

After years of traveling and sampling cuisines from all around the world and learning from the greats in dozens of private kitchens, Chef Savage developed a massive affection for food and sharing experiences over a meal. In a sense, cannabis and food both help enrich our lives, and luckily, the two go well together.

Looking for new ways to enjoy cannabis over traditional methods, he took it upon himself to find a way to infuse cannabis with foods without the hashy flavor— instead opting for low-dose, high-quality foods from the freshest ingredients and cannabis from his own garden.

His goal is to find the marriage between the cultural and connective benefits of both cannabis and food and share them with the world through advocacy, education, and hands-on experiences. At the end of the day, the goal is to break the stigma and help people focus on health, wellness, and mindfulness with safe, educational culinary cannabis experiences that can benefit and enrich our lives in countless ways.

Why Cannabis Cuisine?

Our goal has always been to destigmatize cannabis through the universal language of food. Both food and cannabis have the power to help us forge deeper bonds with our loved ones and connect over meaningful cultural experiences.

However, when it comes to the edible game, there's not a lot to love out there. Between the waiting game for the dose to kick in and the potency levels of standard edibles, it's difficult to find true cannabis cuisine— whole meals to share — instead of single pieces of chocolates or gummies. They're not great to share with family or friends who may be wary of cannabis or the edible experience in general.

That's why we make true cuisine and offer a more mellow experience. All of our dishes are made with low doses of cannabinoids so you can enjoy the gently invigorating aspect without becoming uncomfortable. We add just enough to spark your creativity, relieve your social anxieties, and relax your senses in a way that is much more comfortable and less destructive than alcohol.

Further, cannabis truly belongs in the kitchen. The plant itself including each individual strain offers unique nuances in terpenes and flavors that can elevate any dish.  Much like food and wine pairings, food can be paired with the subtle aromatic and flavor notes found in cannabis with ease.

We chose cannabis cuisine because we can see all of the positives of the plant for whole-body nourishment, wellness, mindfulness, and connection. Cannabis cuisine is an experience, and an all-encompassing journey of the senses that we're looking forward to sharing with you during your next catered event, during class, or at one of our pop-up kitchen events.
